CNMC subsidiary in Zambia marks World Rivers Day with community science outreach and school supplies donation

Sino-Metals Leach Zambia Limited (SMLZ), a Zambia-based subsidiary of China Nonferrous Metal Mining (Group) Co., Ltd. (CNMC), recently held a science outreach activity on river ecosystems and donated school supplies to Minsenga Secondary School in Kalulushi, Copperbelt Province, Zambia, to mark World Rivers Day, which falls on Sept. 27 this year.

The event featured several parts, including a lecture on river conservation, an environmental knowledge quiz, and a donation of school supplies.

It received support from local education authorities and Copperbelt University (CBU), and brought together representatives of SMLZ’s management team and employees, CBU students majoring in environmental studies, and teachers and students of Minsenga Secondary School.

During the lecture, representatives of CBU introduced students to the importance of water resources, the impacts of water pollution, and practical ways to conserve and protect water, highlighting the importance of living in harmony with nature.

The session was followed by an environmental knowledge quiz covering World Rivers Day, water resource protection, and school safety and responsible behavior, with school supplies awarded as prizes to students who performed well.

In his speech at the event, a representative of SMLZ said the company has always regarded environmental protection, community development, and education support as important aspects of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts.

Building on its previous support for school infrastructure, the company held the event to raise students’ awareness of environmental protection and encourage them to conserve water and protect the environment in their daily lives, according to the representative.

A representative of Minsenga Secondary School thanked the company for its support, saying the event provided students with an engaging lesson on environmental protection, and the donated supplies would help support teaching and learning.

SMLZ said the event was part of its ongoing efforts to support local communities through public interest activities.

Going forward, SMLZ will continue to support initiatives in environmental education, student assistance, improvements to teaching conditions, and community development, according to the company.

It will work together with local educational institutions and universities to explore long-term mechanisms for ongoing collaboration on educational assistance and promote the integrated development of ecological conservation and educational assistance, the company said.
